Running Assessments

Peak Sports Physiotherapy offers Running Assessments as well as running-specific strength and conditioning to help you improve your running efficiency and optimise your performance.

Our running optimisation program is designed to help you reach your running goals, whether it be setting a personal best or overcoming a running related injury. Sessions are tailored to each person and typically involve the following:

⦁ Musculoskeletal screening – to identify and address factors that may predispose you to injury or reduced performance
⦁ Running-specific strength programs – Tailored to improve force production and running economy, as well as addressing deficits identified through the screening
⦁ Video running analysis – to provide cues and advice that may accelerate running development
⦁ Load management – to develop a training program that facilitates training adaptions while minimising injury risk

We can help you optimise your training loads, running-technique and running-specific strength to help you:

    • Injury recovery including shin pain, Achilles tendinopathy and knee pain.
    • Improve your efficiency so you can run further or faster with less effort.
    • Prevent future injuries.
    • Return to running.

BENEFITS OF STRENGTH TRAINING FOR RUNNERS

Strength training is often overlooked in distance runners. However, it is now well established that when strength training is performed as part of a running program, it leads to significant improvements in running economy and performance, and reductions in injury risk

    HOW DOES IT WORK?

The improvements shown by strength training have been attributed to increasing muscle coordination and activation, which ultimately leads to increased leg stiffness and propulsive force being applied to the ground. Effectively, this turns your legs into “stiffer springs” that allow you to spend less time on the ground, and more time in the air!

    BENEFITS OF RUNNING ANALYSIS

Running is a skill that is refined with practice and experience. As with most skills, the best exercise to improve running efficiency is running itself. Having said that, running drills and cues can provide a ‘shortcut’ to a better technique that can accelerate your running development.

    HOW DOES IT WORK?

The aim of running drills are to improve your coordination so that the force you apply to the ground propel you forwards rather than slowing you down. In most cases, this is done by reducing braking forces (such as overstriding) and improving horizontal propulsion.

WHAT INJURIES CAN RUNNING ASSESSMENTS HELP?

Clinical research has shown running re-training can help:

    • Patellofemoral joint pain
    • Hamstring injuries
    • Compartment syndrome

    • Back pain
    • Tendinopathies
